Please sign petition to stop horrific cruelty at Pel-Freez
Last Chance for Animals went undercover at Pel-Freez, the largest rabbit slaughterhouse in the United States, and documented horrific abuse.
You can read about what the investigators uncovered here. Warning: VERY graphic images and video.
The video showed workers at the Pel-Freez Arkansas plant routinely breaking the rabbits’ rear legs and then improperly stunning the animals before decapitating them at the start of processing, which means they had their throats slit while still alive–kicking and screaming in pain.
Last Chance for Animals already asked Benton County Prosecuting Attorney Nathan Smith to file animal cruelty charges against those working at the plant, citing 323 instances where rabbits were conscious at the time of slaughter and another 193 where rabbits experienced pain and distress, both in the presence of plant supervisors and, sometimes, USDA inspectors.
Unfortunately, the prosecutor will not be filing charges because Pel-Freez argues that the cruelty documented by LCA at the plant is “common practice” in the industry, and the workers did not knowingly violate state animal cruelty statutes. However, no one can plausibly argue that breaking the legs of conscious rabbits or striking them in the face with knifes is in any way normal or acceptable. So while these practices definitely occur in rabbit slaughterhouses, that does not mean that the practices are legal; they are certainly, quite obviously, inhumane. Pel-Freez (both the company as well as the workers) should absolutely be subject to criminal charges for these heinous acts.
