Fifteen Rabbits

by Felix Salten

Sometimes it seems like one of two things happens with authors: either they are popular in their lifetimes and then forgotten or they are starving artists during their lifetimes and discovered later. Salten falls into the former category. Hardly anyone today even knows that the Disney movie “Bambi” was loosely based on the much more mature and sophisticated novel “Bambi: A Life in the Woods” by Salten. Later, in 1929, he published “Fifteen Rabbits.” The author clearly spent a lot of time informally studying rabbits before writing the novel. While the characters are anthropomorphized some, Salten captures a lot of truths about rabbits as well. One of the best things about Salten’s work is simply that it was written in the era of literature rather than just books, when writing was an art form rather than merely a means to an end. Today writing is rarely beautiful; words are just a tool for conveying the plotline. Salten’s artfulness, however, does not come at the expense of the plot. Indeed, the novel is a page-turner. It is really too bad “Fifteen Rabbits” is largely forgotten today, even among rabbit lovers.

The Rabbits’ Wedding

by Garth Williams

Garth Williams is best known for having illustrated the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. While the rabbit characters are somewhat anthropomorphized, this is still a beautiful book about a bonded pair of rabbits. (They are portrayed as being wild rabbits and yet one of them is black while the other is white.) This book was widely banned in the U.S. when it was first published in 1958, because segregationists felt it promoted interracial marriage. Read the New York Times article about the controversy here
