123These three 9 x 10″ prints have been silk screened by artist Dana Glover in memory of her rabbit Megatron. They are being sold in limited edition sets to benefit Rabbit Rescue and Rehab, the New York City chapter of House Rabbit Society. From the artist:

My rabbit Megatron passed away on May 11, 2013. Illness fell on him unexpectedly that morning and he fought for his life throughout the day. That evening, after the vets did everything they could, I cradled him close to me. He struggled to look up; I could see in his eyes and hear in his labored breath that he was trying with all of his might to hold onto life. I stroked his cheeks and spoke to him soothingly because I wanted to offer him any comfort I could in his hour of need. Minutes later, he took his last breath and died naturally in my arms.

That night, I dreamt about Megatron in a grassy field, sitting underneath a tree and the night sky, looking up at the moon as a gentle breeze washed over him. I awoke immediately feeling sad, but knowing that Megatron was telling me he wasn’t suffering anymore.

I made these ink drawings as sort of a catharsis for myself, but also hoping that other rabbit owners could relate to the iconic imagery of the Black Rabbit leading their bunny’s spirit away from the pain of their body and off to a place without suffering. Any pet owner knows how incredibly difficult it is to lose them, and that the grief changes over time, but never truly goes away. When I look at these images, it’s bittersweet, but they give me a sense of comfort and I truly hope they can do the same for others.

To honor Megatron, I’m selling these silkscreens and donating 50% of the profits to NYC Rabbit Rescue & Rehab. Helping other rabbits in need seems like the perfect way to commemorate him.

The prints can be purchased for $30 apiece or $80 for the full set of three.
