Rabbit Crisis in Houston--Help Needed!|
In late December the Houston SPCA was called to a breeder’s home to seize more than 150 rabbits because the breeder was very ill and could no longer care for them. Bunny Buddies, a Houston based non-profit rabbit rescue and education group, stepped up to help the SPCA care for the rabbits and find them homes. Bunny Buddies volunteers spent every day feeding, cleaning and caring for the rabbits. Many of the volunteers gave up their Christmas holiday time and even came for hours every evening after a long day at their regular jobs.
Approximately 70 of these bunnies were taken into foster care. We are very grateful to a number of veterinarians who came forward to offer low cost – and in some cases free – spays and neuters for the foster bunnies. Now we need to find these rabbits permanent, loving, adoptive homes. Most of them are beautiful Jersey Woolies and Fuzzy Lops. The foster homes are reporting that the bunnies are really enjoying the chance to hop around and explore outside of the tiny cages that they were used to. Lots of fresh veggies and room to run seem to be quite the novelty for these rabbits and they seem much happier.
We know that there are wonderful bunnies all over the country in need of good homes. This case, however, is unusual, and we are asking for urgent help in finding adoptive homes for this group. Our foster homes are not set up for this many bunnies and they will not be able to continue caring for them long term. We are also in need of donations of timothy hay, timothy pellets and recycled newspaper litter.
If you are interested in adopting one of these beautiful bunnies, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you can help by making a donation, please email us at email@example.com. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
