Is there a way to tell if an animal has already been spayed?
Historically, exploratory surgery has been required to be sure. Now, many veterinarians, shelters, and rescue agencies use tattoo paste on or near the surgical incision.
A tattoo at the surgery site is a permanent indication of a completed spay/neuter. This practice prevents unnecessary surgery and complies with the Association of Shelter Veterinarians guidelines and ASPCA best practices.
