The rabbits need your help! Here are some ways that you can help rabbits and get involved in the volunteer work of House Rabbit Society:

  • Visit your shelter! Socialize the rabbits, clean their cages, bring them hay and veggies, and do whatever they need to keep them healthy and happy and to make them more adoptable. You may need to participate in a training session with the shelter staff in order to be a shelter volunteer.
  • Photograph the shelter rabbits and create a Petfinder or other adoptable website for them, if the shelter doesn’t have one
  • Make up adoptable flyers with photos and descriptions of the shelter bunnies and place them on bulletin boards in your community (especially vet offices & coffeeshops)
  • If you feel comfortable with your level of experience, tell the shelter you’d be willing to answer questions for adopters about the care of the rabbits once they’re adopted
  • Make sure the shelter is giving out good care information for the rabbits; go to our shelter forms page for forms that you can give to your shelter to use if they don’t have things like this; there are also posters and flyers and things that you can put up on this page as well
  • Visit pet stores that sell rabbits and ask them to consider ceasing rabbit sales in their stores and adopting out shelter rabbits instead. We do not allow our flyers to be used in pet stores that sell rabbits.
  • Talk to your shelter about setting up off site adoption days at Petco or Petsmart or other pet supply stores.
  • If you have a local HRS chapter or other rabbit rescue group in the area, consider bringing vegetables or hay to them to help out
  • If you have the time, the space, and the resources, consider fostering a rabbit for your local shelter

If you’re interested in volunteering or fostering, contact your local chapter or our Richmond, CA headquarters.

If there’s no chapter in your area, and you have been volunteering with a rescue or shelter, apply to be an HRS Educator.

If you’re already running a rescue and have a lot of rabbit experience, consider becoming a Chapter of House Rabbit Society.

The bunnies thank you!
